Say a vehicle comes into the shop with a damaged windshield that’s equipped with a front-facing camera. The windshield is replaced but an ADAS calibration is not performed, so the car goes back on the road with a camera that’s off by a millimeter.
Now the driver is going down the freeway. The misaligned camera sees an object on the side of the road and thinks it’s in front of the vehicle. The car automatically brakes while doing 60 miles per hour.
It's a scary and potentially very dangerous scenario that could have been avoided with the right equipment and an approach to vehicle repair that emphasizes accuracy over speed. This need for accuracy is why you shouldn't trust calibration systems with a lot of manual steps.
Some ADAS calibration equipment uses tape measures or plumb bobs in the initial setup of the vehicle. Well, when one millimeter of difference is all it takes to potentially put a driver at risk, you can see where relying on a person to set up the tape measure exactly right every single time isn't the smartest solution.
